The history of Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology can be traced back to as early as the 1960s. Its’ predecessor is Department of Biochemistry, Lanzhou Medical College. It was founded in the year 1960. Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology began to undertake the teaching task of undergraduate, postgraduate and junior college students from 1968, and get the master's degree conferring authority in 1985. In 2003, it merged into lanzhou university, and changed its name to Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology formally. In more than 50 years of development process, the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has made remarkable progress in the teaching and scientific research through the continuous efforts of all the teachers and the students. The single and solitary goal of biochemistry and molecular biology research institute is to cultivate more and more all-round talents for modern China.

Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology boasts a qualified faculty of 13 full-time teachers and researchers, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 7 lecturers and 2 teaching assistants. Among them, there are 6 Drs, 1 Dr candiadate and 4 masters. In the recent years, the Institute has been proactive in recruiting youthful strengths and optimizing the echelon of its faculty.

Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology covers an area of 430 square meters. It  consists of 4 students’ labs, 5 teachers' offices, 2 graduate students’ offices, 3 teachers’ laboratories, 1 molecular biology lab, 1 PCR lab, 1 quantitative analysis lab, 1 preparation room, 1 cleaning and disinfection room, 1 microcomputer room, etc.
