The Development of Operative Surgery Institute has experienced a long process. In the 1950s, operative surgery as a part of surgery pandect taught by the surgery department. In the 1970s, Anatomy and Operative Surgery Laboratory was founded, and was consist of professional staff of anatomical and surgical. To experimental lesson, topography was primary, whereas surgery scene visit was secondary. Experimental projects were opened as anatomy and operative method of the inguinal hernia, anatomy and operative method of appendix, neck anatomy and tracheotomy, etc. In the 1980s,the Operative Surgery Department set up by surgeons of the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital, and established a certain scale of operation laboratories in the new teaching building, determined experimental projects, equipped fulltime technicians. For years, operative surgery not only was widely fascinated by students, but also has received much attention from school. Teaching Innovation Project of Anatomy and Operative Surgery Collaborative Teaching Module was found in the 1990s. For several years of exploring, a more perfect teaching system has established. As a result, textbooks, teaching syllabus, experimental syllabus and three-basis teaching plan have been published, and a second prize of the teaching achievement prize has been won at the provincial level.

Nowadays, Operative Surgery Institute which is subordinate to the basic medicine college of Lanzhou University is a component element of the Medical Experimental Center. At the present time, Operative Surgery has been becoming an independent discipline with perfect teaching content, teaching method, teaching form and experimental system. This Institute now has 7 full-time teaching and research staff, including 3 professor,1 assistant professors,1 senior lab technician and 2 lecturer. Operative Surgery Institute carries out various activities including operative surgery research, teaching, training, practice, discipline construction and others. It offers the courses of “Operative Surgery” for undergraduates majoring in medicine or related majors. In recent years, the main science research directions of Operative Surgery Institute were the study of brain function and disease, surgery (General Surgery), hepatobiliary minimally invasive surgery and hepatopancreat obliliary. We have 10 standard operating laboratories, 1 operating preparation room and 1 multimedia classroom.
