The Institute of Immunology evolved from the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Immunology as its particular research and teaching strength. Since its establishment in 1946 the Institute has maintained a strong research on infection immunology, tumor immunology and immunopathology, and plays a central role in the teaching of Medical Immunology,  Clinical Immunology and Immunological Testing for all medical undergraduates, Cellular and Molecular Immunology for medical graduates and doctoral candidates.
In 2003, the Institute of Immunology got the authority to train graduate students for Master¡¯s degree on Immunology. All faculties in the institute published 26 teaching materials on immunology as chief editor or participated editor, and over 100 papers publicly.
The Institute of Immunology has established four opening laboratories: Molecular Immunology laboratory, Cell Culture Room, Fluorescence Microscopy Rooms and Animal Holding Rooms, which adapt for the needs of research for all students and teachers.
Now, the institute comprises 10 full-time faculty members, which include two professors, one associate professor, five lecturers and two technicians. Moreover, three part-time faculty members include one Adjunct Professor (Xiong Sidong from Fudan University), one Chair Professor (Duan Dongsheng from University of Missouri ), one Visiting Professor (Zhang Mingjie from U.S. Food and Drug Administration ) in the Institute of Immunology.
Research
1.      Infection immunity: Research on the anti-infection immune mechanisms of microorganisms such as Mycobecterium tuberculosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans et al.
2.      Tumor immunity: Investigation on the antitumor and immunoregulation mechanisms with eosinophils and transfer factor, and development of the new immunological method to treat tumor.
3.      Chinese herbal immunity: Investigate on the antitumor and immunoregulation activity with Chinese herbal medicine such as extracts from sophora moorcofliana et al.
4.      Immunotolerance in pregnancy: Research on the molecular mechanisms immunotolerance in pregnancy.
